Darke & Taylor was thrilled to be one of the principal sponsors of the Abbey Touraid Festival 2016. Abbey Touraid is a UK-registered charity that gives opportunities to disadvantaged children from around the world by bringing them to the UK for ten days of cultural, sporting and social experiences that benefit them both psychologically and educationally.
The charity works in partnership with Reading Abbey RFC and three schools in Reading, and this year has brought 30 young people, and their carers, from Botswana, Tanzania and Kenya to the UK. The children are hosted by the families of children attending Highdown School, The Piggott School and Reading School, and Darke & Taylor is proudly sponsoring the Tanzanian team.
During their stay, the children go on a number of day trips including a Thames boat ride, a tour of Twickenham Stadium and a visit to Legoland. The visit culminates in a Rugby Festival hosted by Reading Abbey RFC which sees 16 teams of youngsters playing a series of sevens rugby matches and enjoying a BBQ and other family fun.
Paul McNaughton, managing director of Darke & Taylor, said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Tanzanian team. For these children from deprived communities, it really is the experience of a lifetime, and it is wonderful to see them having so much fun and growing in confidence at the same time.”
