The Blenheim Palace Orangery presented a unique opportunity to blend historical preservation with modern electrical innovation. Blenheim palace’s renowned for its architecture and historical significance. Our team was tasked with upgrading the electrical systems within the Orangery, ensuring that the new installations were both discreet and sympathetic to the buildings historical integrity.

Project challenges

WIRELESS LIGHTING CONTROLS

Implementing a wireless lighting control system, designed to be sympathetic to the buildings fabric, presented it’s own challenge with the depth and build-up of walls making the signal and communication around the Orangery a complicated issue.

Solution: Ensuring optimal locations for the switches demanded careful consideration. Detailed planning and comprehensive surveys were essential to ensure all locations worked seamlessly, guaranteeing there would be no signal dropouts. This required precise coordination and innovative problem-solving to integrate modern technology while preserving the historic integrity of the Orangery.

LIVE ENVIRONMENT

Throughout the project, Blenheim Palace remained open to the public, creating a live environment outside the project boundary.

Solution: This necessitated careful scheduling of deliveries to avoid disrupting the daily operations of the palace and its gardens. Certain tasks had to be meticulously coordinated with all stakeholders to ensure minimal interference with the day-to-day activities of the estate. By strategically planning our work and maintaining clear communication with the palace management, we were able to seamlessly integrate our operations into the vibrant and busy environment of this historic landmark.

LISTED BUILDING

The client requested skirting board sockets; however, the skirtings listed, making this option unviable.

Solution: Collaborating closely with the architect and Savvy, the main contractor, we devised an innovative solution: replicating the skirting board using a joinery detail positioned in front of the existing skirting. This approach allowed us to provide power at low level while preserving and leaving the original skirting completely undamaged. This careful and creative planning ensured that the historical integrity of the Orangery was maintained while meeting the clients’ functional requirements.

Technical overview

Darke & Taylor completed a comprehensive electrical installation at Blenheim Palace Orangery, encompassing several key elements. We implemented a specialist wireless lighting control system to complement the historical architecture, ensuring seamless operation without compromising the buildings fabric.
